LEADERSHIP
Imbumba Social Solutions is the brainchild of Richard Mabaso, a humanitarian and a social entrepreneur, who is also the Founder and Chief Enabler of the Imbumba Foundation. The concept innovator of the Trek4Mandela Expedition, the Caring4Girls Menstrual Hygiene Programme and Vision 20/20, he has over 20 years’ experience as a Development Practitioner. He studied Development Studies at the University of Zululand, attended the Social Entrepreneurship Certificate Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and also studied International Hospitality Management at Fanshawe College, Ontario, Canada.
A 6-time successful summiteer of Mount Kilimanjaro who grew up in a rural village in Mpumalanga, South Africa he personally understands the hardships and realities faced by our destitute communities. This first-hand experience has resulted in the appreciation for impactful social investments and understanding of how it can create and sustain generational well-being.
After completing a hospitality internship, Mabaso went on to work in the non-profit and community development field. His dream is to make a significant change in the life of others and inspire leadership and self-esteem.
In a developing country like South Africa, it is paramount to build
sustainable yet futuristic initiatives that address the entrenched
poverty cycles often caused by a misalignment between
corporate objectives and community needs.”
RICHARD MABASO
After a fearful conversation that Mabaso overheard between his mother and niece about menstruation, he originated an initiative that comforts female menstrual hygiene matters within poverty-stricken schools called Caring4Girls; which is currently the largest collector and distributor of sanitary towels to school girls across South Africa.
Further, together with his friend and mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane, Mabaso decided to push the envelope by creating the first and one of the largest Trek4Mandela expeditions in celebration of Mandela Day that brings together esteemed individuals to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Caring4Girls initiative.
Given Mabaso’s holistic view on social development, he then expanded on these opportunities to further the impact on the school girls by creating the Vision 20/20 initiative which is a thought leadership programme that enables matriculants to further their academic learning.
